Shaws of Darwen Ceramic Sinks

Shaws of Darwen Ceramic Sinks

Handcrafted Kitchen Sinks since 1897 All Shaws of Darwen fireclay sinks feel cool and silky to the touch, but with a robust non-porous glaze which gives an extremely hardwearing surface. Shaws sinks demonstrate the natural characteristics of heavy duty fireclay ceramics and are created by a ‘slip casting’ process by pouring a mixture of clay and water into a porous mould by hand. Craftsmen remove the Kitchen Sinks from their moulds once dry, and then through a process of sponging and ‘fettling’, complete the sink by hand to create a smooth finish. Following a gradual drying period of up to 40 hours, the sinks are then prepared with a ground coat before being glazed. Firing in specially designed kilns at temperatures of up to 1200 degrees centigrade completes this rigorous four week process. Whilst modern technology has improved manufacturing methods over the years, the principles of this handcrafted product remain the same. Traditional craftsmanship is as important now as it was in 1897
